What No Exam Life Insurance Really Means for Dangerous Jobs
Three different products get called no exam life insurance; which one a roofer, lineman or electrician lands in decides the limit, the price and whether a two-year graded period applies.
No exam life insurance is available to many people in dangerous jobs, depending on age, coverage amount and health, but “no exam” is a label for three different products: accelerated underwriting, simplified issue and guaranteed issue. The first checks your prescription history, driving record and insurance history instead of drawing blood, and can place a healthy applicant in the same rate class an exam would. The last asks no health questions at all, pays less than the face amount for a natural-cause death in roughly the first two years, and costs the most per dollar of coverage. Every route except guaranteed issue still asks what you do for a living, so a roofer and an electrician can fill out the same form and get different prices.
Key takeaways
- “No exam” means three different things. Accelerated underwriting waives the exam and fluids for applicants who meet favorable risk criteria inside an otherwise fully underwritten process (Society of Actuaries, 2023). Simplified issue uses a shorter health questionnaire plus data checks at lower limits. Guaranteed issue asks no health questions, issues small amounts and carries a graded death benefit.
- Carriers check records instead of blood. In Munich Re’s 2024 survey of 27 accelerated underwriting programs, every program used prescription history and motor vehicle reports routinely, every program used MIB’s Insurance Activity Index, and more than half used credit data.
- Limits have climbed. In 2022 every one of 31 surveyed carriers offered accelerated underwriting between $150,000 and $500,000 and over 60 percent went to $1 million; by mid-2024 the average maximum was $2.5 million, with one-third of programs cutting the ceiling for applicants aged 50 and over.
- Skipping the exam does not skip the occupation questionnaire. Occupation is a non-medical factor that can route a file to traditional underwriting, and BLS 2024 data put roofers at 48.7 fatal work injuries per 100,000 full-time workers against 5.3 for electricians and 6.9 for plumbers.
- Guaranteed issue pays a graded death benefit for about two years: a natural-cause death inside that window pays less than the face amount, even when every answer was honest, because there were no answers.
- Blue Collar Workers Covered: no exam for many applicants, depending on age, amount and health. A licensed agent chooses the route with you, and coverage is not available in New York.

Check my coverage optionsWhat does “no exam” life insurance actually mean?
“No exam” describes three products that share one feature, no paramedical visit, and differ on everything else. The Society of Actuaries defines accelerated underwriting as “the waiving of traditional underwriting requirements (e.g., fluids, medical exams)” for a subset of applicants who meet favorable risk criteria in an otherwise fully underwritten process (Society of Actuaries, Product Matters, August 2023). Simplified issue is a separate product with a shorter application and lower ceilings. Guaranteed issue is the product you buy when nothing else will take you.
| Type | What is checked | Typical limits | Who it suits | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Accelerated underwriting | A full application with health questions, verified against MIB, prescription history, a motor vehicle report and often credit data and digital health records; no exam or labs when the data look clean | $150,000 to $500,000 at every surveyed carrier in 2022, over 60 percent to $1 million; average maximum $2.5 million in 2024; most common eligible ages 18 to 60 | A healthy applicant inside the age band with a clean license and no concerning prescriptions who wants a large amount at regular rates, including Preferred classes | Occupation, build, blood pressure, a DUI, a felony or a bankruptcy can send the file to traditional underwriting, where an exam gets scheduled |
| Simplified issue | A shorter health questionnaire plus data checks; no exam, no labs | Lower than accelerated programs; one instant-decision indexed universal life program issues $50,000 to $500,000 for ages 18 to 70 | Someone who wants an answer in minutes, or who sits outside an accelerated program’s age or amount band | Usually a higher price per $1,000 and a lower ceiling than fully underwritten coverage; a knockout answer can end the application |
| Guaranteed issue | Nothing. No health questions, no records pulled | Small amounts meant for final expenses, far below the $150,000 low end of accelerated programs | An applicant who has been declined elsewhere or has a serious health history and needs a modest amount | A graded death benefit of about two years, the highest cost per dollar of coverage, and amounts too small to replace an income |
The thing to hold onto: accelerated underwriting is the same policy, at the same rate classes, as the exam route. Simplified and guaranteed issue are different, smaller policies that charge for the convenience.
What still gets checked when there is no nurse visit?
Without a nurse, a carrier checks records instead of blood. Principal’s 2025 underwriting guide, a carrier document written for agents, says its no-exam program evaluates the health questions on the application, the Motor Vehicle Report, prescription history, MIB (the insurance industry’s shared applicant database) and digital health data when needed; it issues Standard, Super Standard, Preferred and Super Preferred classes with no exam and no lab testing, a decision can come “in as little as 24 hours,” and a file that is not approved “will go through the traditional underwriting process, and a paramed appointment will be scheduled” (Principal Underwriting Guide, February 2025).
That pattern holds across the industry. Munich Re’s survey of 27 companies with accelerated underwriting in production as of June 30, 2024 found prescription history and motor vehicle reports used routinely by every program, MIB’s Insurance Activity Index used universally, credit data used by more than half, and electronic health records used routinely by about one-quarter. The average rate of applications accelerated with no human underwriter review was 11 percent, so a person usually still reads the file even when nobody draws blood (Munich Re, 2024 Accelerated Underwriting Survey, April 2025).
The knockouts are specific. Principal’s no-exam eligibility requires, among other things, no more than one DUI or reckless driving conviction in the past 10 years, no felony conviction in the past 10 years, no bankruptcy in the past five years, no travel to hazardous locations, stated blood pressure no higher than 150/91 (ages 18 to 44) or 155/90 (45 to 60), total cholesterol of 280 or less, and a build inside its weight chart, which for ages 20 to 44 tops out at 245 pounds for Standard at 5 feet 10 inches and 260 pounds at 6 feet. Outside those lines the exam comes back.
Does skipping the exam skip the occupation questions?
No. Every route except guaranteed issue asks what you do for a living, and the answer can change the price or the route. Principal lists Occupation among the non-medical risk factors that send a case to traditional underwriting, which means a hazardous job can be the one thing that puts the nurse back on the calendar. Underwriters look at duties (heights, confined spaces, explosives, aircraft, underwater work), environment (remote sites, extreme weather, open water) and frequency (daily versus occasional exposure), and the result can be a higher premium class, a temporary rating, or a flat extra, an added charge per $1,000 of coverage for as long as the hazard exists (Spicer Insurance Agency, life insurance options for high-risk jobs).
The numbers behind those decisions come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In 2024 the fatal work injury rate was 3.3 per 100,000 full-time equivalent workers across all occupations. Roofers were at 48.7, structural iron and steel workers 37.8, helpers in the construction trades 35.8, construction laborers 15.8, electrical power-line installers 13.8, carpenters 7.5, plumbers and pipefitters 6.9, welders 6.9, HVAC mechanics 6.7 and electricians 5.3 (BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, 2024 data, released February 2026). A trade at 5 to 8 per 100,000 sits far from the roofing and ironwork band, which is the factual reason many tradesmen are not rated for occupation while roofers and ironworkers often are.
What a rating costs: Ethos’s high-risk guide puts a mild occupational risk at roughly 25 to 50 percent above standard and a moderate risk at a table rating of 50 to 200 percent or more (Ethos, life insurance for high-risk occupations). Policygenius gives a worked flat extra: $2 per $1,000 for five years on a $100,000 policy adds $200 a year (Policygenius, how your job affects your life insurance rates). No US carrier publishes an occupation rate table, so any site quoting “the roofer rate” is guessing. Does Your Job Make Life Insurance More Expensive? Trade by Trade walks through the math, and Life Insurance for Construction Workers, Trade by Trade and Best Life Insurance for Electricians, Welders and Skilled Trades take the trades one at a time.
No exam means nobody draws blood. It does not mean nobody checks, and it never means nobody asks what you do all day.

Check my coverage optionsWhat is a graded death benefit on guaranteed issue?
A graded death benefit means the policy pays less than its face amount if the insured dies of natural causes during an opening window, about two years on the guaranteed issue products Ethos describes for severe risks (Ethos). In a common design the beneficiary receives the premiums paid, sometimes with interest, rather than the face amount during that window, while accidental death often pays in full from the first day. After the window closes the full benefit applies.
That is a different clock from the two-year contestable period that individual life policies carry, during which the insurer can contest a claim over a misstatement on the application; the Texas Department of Insurance notes that replacing a policy restarts that period (Texas Department of Insurance, life insurance guide, December 2025). On an accelerated or simplified issue policy, a truthful application pays the full face amount from day one. On guaranteed issue, the graded schedule applies no matter what, because the carrier never asked.
Guaranteed issue exists for the person who has run out of other doors: declined before, a serious diagnosis, a need for a modest amount to cover final expenses. A healthy 35-year-old welder with a clean license and no prescriptions has routes that ask questions and pay in full from day one, and guaranteed issue would charge him the most for the least.
How much coverage can you get without an exam, and what does it cost?
The limit depends on the route, your age and the carrier. Munich Re’s 2022 survey of 31 companies found every one offered accelerated underwriting between $150,000 and $500,000, quite a few capped at $500,000, over 60 percent went to $1 million, the most common eligible age range was 18 to 60, and nearly half limited the largest amounts to younger ages (Munich Re, 2022 Accelerated Underwriting Survey). By mid-2024 the average maximum had reached $2.5 million, and one-third of programs still band the highest amounts to younger ages, most often cutting back at 50 and over (Munich Re, 2024).
On the permanent side, Transamerica’s FFIUL II Express, an indexed universal life product, issues $50,000 to $500,000 to applicants aged 18 to 70 on a fully digital application with an instant decision (Coverager on the FFIUL II Express launch). Mutual of Omaha describes its IUL Express as being “for clients who want the speed and ease of simplified underwriting” (Mutual of Omaha, indexed universal life). For contrast on the term side, Ladder says it issues up to $3 million without an exam to applicants aged 20 to 60 (Ladder support, how much coverage Ladder offers). Those are published facts, not recommendations; which carrier fits a given person depends on state, age, health and trade, and that call belongs to a licensed agent.
On price, accelerated underwriting costs nothing extra: by definition it is the same product at the same rate classes as the exam route, and Principal’s program issues Standard through Super Preferred without an exam. Simplified issue and guaranteed issue are different products, and the consistent finding of consumer guides is that they cost more per dollar of coverage and cap lower than fully underwritten policies (The Motley Fool, examination-free life insurance). For an anchor on fully underwritten pricing, the Policygenius October 2025 index averages a $500,000 20-year term policy for a Preferred non-smoking man at $29.56 a month at age 30 and $43.52 at age 40 (Policygenius Life Insurance Price Index, October 2025). No equivalent index exists for indexed universal life, because IUL premiums are flexible within contract limits.
If the no-exam route leads to an indexed universal life policy, the exam question is the smaller decision. An IUL’s cost of insurance rises with age, the carrier can change its caps and participation rates, an underfunded policy can lapse, surrender charges apply in the early years, the contract is complex, and the policy needs an in-force illustration review every year. The agent’s competence matters more than the application format. Indexed Universal Life Insurance Explained for Working Families covers the mechanics and the downsides before you sign anything.
Is the life insurance at work a no-exam policy?
Yes, in the narrow sense that group life through an employer or a benefit fund usually comes with no exam and no health questions, but it is a different product with different rules. The Texas Department of Insurance notes that employers offering basic group life must make it available to all employees regardless of age or health, that it often equals one or two times annual salary, that you usually answer no health questions unless you want more, and that it typically ends when you leave the job (Texas Department of Insurance). LIMRA’s 2025 Insurance Barometer found that about one in four insured adults has only the coverage they get at work (LIMRA, 2025 Insurance Barometer Study). When a layoff or retirement ends that coverage, state conversion laws such as Maine’s allow 31 days to convert to an individual policy without evidence of insurability, at individual rates (24-A M.R.S. section 2621). What Happens to Your Work Life Insurance When You Leave or Retire explains that clock.
Who should still take the exam?
Take the exam when the data route cannot give you what you need: an amount above the program’s ceiling, an age past its band, a file that got routed to traditional underwriting, or a health or build detail that only labs can clear. Principal’s guide says a case not approved under accelerated underwriting goes to the traditional process with a paramed appointment, and its Healthy Lifestyle Credits can earn up to two tables of credit that offset table ratings, which is a reason a fit ironworker carrying a flat extra might want the full workup rather than the short form.
Tobacco is the other big reason. The same guide requires no cigar use in the prior 12 months and no other tobacco use in the prior five years for non-tobacco consideration under its no-exam program, and the price gap is large: the Policygenius index shows a Preferred smoker at 40 paying $147.27 a month for the same $500,000 20-year term policy that costs a non-smoker $43.52, about 3.4 times. A former smoker who has been clean for years documents that with labs, not with a checkbox.
The exam route is not for the person who needs a modest amount in force this week. Simplified issue exists for that need, and the trade-off is the price per dollar.
How Blue Collar Workers Covered handles no-exam applications
Blue Collar Workers Covered does not pick the route; a licensed agent picks it with you. The sequence runs like this:
- You answer six questions on the apply page. It takes about a minute, and none of the questions are about health.
- An independent licensed agent in the Ascend Life Wealth network texts or calls with numbers and asks what a carrier will ask: age, amount, health history, prescriptions, driving record and what you do on the job.
- The agent matches the file to a route: accelerated underwriting if your age, amount and records fit; simplified issue if you need speed or sit outside a program’s band; the full exam if the data route will not clear you or you want the credits; guaranteed issue only if nothing else will take you.
- The carrier underwrites and decides. Nobody on this side of the application can promise the outcome.
No exam for many applicants, depending on age, amount and health. A carrier can still ask for an exam, labs, a motor vehicle report or prescription history, and the occupation questionnaire applies on every route except guaranteed issue. Blue Collar Workers Covered is not an insurance company and not a licensed insurance agency. It connects consumers with independent licensed insurance agents, who provide all quotes, advice, and coverage. Nothing on this page is an offer of coverage or a guarantee of coverage; all applications are subject to underwriting; coverage and results vary by state, carrier, age and health; not available in New York.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get life insurance with no medical exam if I work construction?
Often, depending on your age, the amount, your health and your specific duties. Accelerated and simplified issue programs take construction applicants, but occupation is a non-medical factor that can route a file to traditional underwriting, and the price follows the duties: BLS 2024 fatal injury rates run from 7.5 per 100,000 for carpenters to 48.7 for roofers. A carpenter with a clean record is a very different file from a roofer, even though both wrote “construction” on the form.
Does no exam mean no health questions?
No, except on guaranteed issue. Accelerated underwriting and simplified issue both ask health questions and verify the answers against prescription history, motor vehicle records and MIB, which every program in Munich Re’s 2024 survey used. A wrong answer matters, because individual policies carry a two-year contestable period. Only guaranteed issue asks nothing, and it charges for that with a graded death benefit and small amounts.
Is guaranteed issue life insurance worth it?
For someone who has been declined or has a serious health history and needs a modest amount for final expenses, it can be the only door open; Ethos describes it as the route for severe risks. For a healthy tradesman it is usually the worst deal available: the highest price per dollar, the smallest amounts, and a graded period of about two years before a natural-cause death pays in full. Try an accelerated or simplified issue program first, and let a licensed agent tell you which route fits your file.
How fast can coverage start?
It depends on the route. Instant-decision programs give an answer at the end of the online application, and one carrier’s accelerated program says a decision can come in as little as 24 hours. If the file is routed to traditional underwriting, a paramed exam gets scheduled and the clock stretches. Coverage starts when the policy is issued and the first premium is paid, Texas gives a free-look period of at least 10 to 20 days to cancel for a full refund, and you should never cancel an existing policy until the new one is in force.
Is no exam life insurance more expensive?
Not always. Accelerated underwriting is the same policy at the same rate class as the exam route, including Preferred classes, for applicants who qualify. Simplified issue and guaranteed issue are separate products that, by the consistent finding of consumer guides, cost more per dollar of coverage and cap lower. An occupation rating or flat extra applies on any route that asks about your job, because it is based on your duties, not on your blood work.
